What the names mean

Every marker, in plain English.

What each one is — not what a result about it would mean. A number outside a reference range is a reason for a conversation, which is why someone sits opposite you when you get it.

Vitamin D
Measured as 25-OH vitamin D — the form your body makes from sunlight and takes in from food.
Ferritin
The protein that stores iron. It is the usual way iron stores are measured.
HbA1c
Your average blood glucose over roughly the last three months, in one number.
hs-CRP
C-reactive protein at high sensitivity — a general marker of inflammation.
Folate
Vitamin B9, taken in from food. Measured in serum.
Vitamin B12
A vitamin taken in from food and stored in the liver. Measured in serum.
Testosterone
A hormone measured in serum. Levels move through the day, so the time of the sample is recorded.
TSH
Thyroid-stimulating hormone, made by the pituitary gland.
Cortisol
A hormone that follows a daily rhythm — the time of the draw changes the number.
Cystatin C
A protein used to estimate how the kidneys are filtering.
NT-proBNP
A protein released by heart muscle when it is under stretch.
FSH
Follicle-stimulating hormone, another pituitary hormone.
Progesterone
A cycle hormone. Where you are in your cycle changes what the number is compared against.
AMH
Anti-Müllerian hormone, produced by the ovaries.
